Archbishop John calls us to ‘journey with Mary to Christ’

To mark the beginning of the month of Mary this May, Archbishop John Wilson is encouraging people to pray the Rosary to journey with Mary to Christ.

In a recorded message to the Archdiocese, Archbishop John said Mary is the “perfect disciple” who in perfect obedience to God gave a resounding yes in her fiat – a yes that changed not only her lives but the lives of all of us.

Archbishop John said:

“Turning to Our Blessed Lady through the Rosary helps us to draw closer to Christ. Through our praying the Rosary, and Our Lady’s intercession, we recall God’s promise to us in the Lord Jesus. Our Mother Mary is a model for all of us. She shows us how to be a true follower of Christ."

The Archbishop built on the story of the Wedding at Cana, explaining how Mary not only interceded for those who needed the “help of her Son, our Saviour” but also modelled how we should all live our faith. This is because when the Lord Jesus responded with: “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come”, Mary’s response, Archbishop John adds, “was not one of dejection or doubt. But one of complete and utter obedience to the will of God.”

That is why, Archbishop John said, making the simple, but powerful, words of Mary - “do whatever He tells you” - points us to the mystery of Christ. “By following Mary’s example, turning to Christ in prayer and trust, we too can be the pilgrim people of God’s promise”.

The power of the Rosary, the Archbishop said, “is that it invites us to pray through the mysteries of our faith. As the beads move through our fingers, we pray with Mary as she shows and leads the way to Christ”.

Archbishop John concludes by calling for us all to surrender to the Lord and making “do whatever He tells you” a part of our life. “And may Mary, the Star of the New Evangelisation, teach us to love Jesus as she loves Him so that others too might know His love.”

The month of May is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Paul VI in 1965 said during this month “a greater abundance of God's merciful gifts comes down to us from our Mother's throne”.
